Proof John F. Kennedy Presidential Dollars (Buy on eBay) are special collectible versions of the standard circulating coin.
The United States Mint creates specially minted Proof coins with a sharp relief on polished and treated blanks. These coins have frosted raised design elements and mirrored background, which results in a striking cameo effect.
Proof John F. Kennedy Presidential Dollars were originally available as part of the 2015 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, the 2015 Proof Set, and the 2015 Silver Proof Set issued directly by the U.S. Mint. They were also sold as individual coins. Sales for the 2015 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets increased from the year prior to 222,068 units sold.
In addition, on September 16, 2015, the Mint offered a 2015 John F. Kennedy Presidential Coin and Chronicles Set that included a Reverse Proof version of the coin—which was the only way to obtain the coin. The sets were also limited to 50,000 units. This was a substantial increase over the 2015 Harry S. Truman Presidential Coin and Chronicles Set and the 2015 Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Coin and Chronicles Set in response to complaints.
The date, mint mark, and the motto “E Pluribus Unum” are located on the edge inscription of the coin. The Mint also created special packaging for Proof Sets so that collectors can view the edges of the coins.

John F. Kennedy, or “JFK,” served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and his heroism earned him the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart. He served six years in the House of Representatives and seven years in the U.S. Senate before being elected President of the United States. Notable events during his presidency included the Bay of Pigs Invasion—which led to the creation of the Peace Corps—the Cuban Missile Crisis and the launch of the first American manned spacecraft. He was tragically assassinated in November 1963, sending shock waves of grief around the world.
