Richard Nixon Background:
The high point of his presidency was ending the war in Vietnam, improving relations with the USSR and opening trade with China. After that, things went downhill as he became embroiled in the Watergate scandal and cover-up with dozens of his aides and cabinet members indicted. Nixon is the only president to resign to avoid impeachment proceedings.
Coinage issued during his tenure was all clad apart from 40% silver Kennedy half dollars. Also, the famous GSA sale of Carson City silver dollars began in 1972.
Notable quotes: “I am not a crook.” “I was not lying. I said things that later on seemed to be untrue.” “Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be peppy, always remember, others may hate you. Those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.”
