Ronald Reagan Background:
He is remembered for being a very popular president who increased the defense budget and cut taxes. He also changed his approach to the USSR in his second term, beginning historic talks with Soviet leader Gorbachev on arms control and other issues, but his term was harmed by the Iran Contra scandal.
In coinage, two major events occurred. First, the commemorative coin program was relaunched for the first time since 1954 with the 1982 Washington half dollar. Second, the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle programs were both launched.
Notable quotes: “Mr. Gorbachev, please tear down that wall.” “In a world wracked by hatred, economic crisis and political tension, America remains mankind’s best hope.” “People don’t start wars, governments do.”
