The United States Mint creates specially minted Proof coins with a sharp relief on polished and treated blanks. These coins have frosted raised design elements and mirrored background, which results in a striking cameo effect.
Proof Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Dollars were originally available as part of the 2011 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, the 2011 Proof Set, and the 2011 Silver Proof Set, issued directly by the U.S. Mint. Additionally, they were sold as individual coins. Unfortunately, sales of the Presidential Dollar Proof Sets reached a new low of 299,853 sets in 2011.
The date, mint mark, and the motto “E Pluribus Unum” are located on the edge inscription of the coin. The Mint also created special packaging for Proof Sets so that collectors can view the edges of the coins.
Background:
Prior to becoming President, Ulysses S. Grant had fought in the Mexican-American War under General Zachary Taylor. At the start of the American Civil War, he was appointed to command a volunteer regiment. He would eventually rise to the rank of General of the Army. He became the president of the United States in 1869 and would serve two terms. The memoirs written after his retirement as considered one of the greatest military autobiographies ever written.
